Biometric Systems

Biometric access control is a specific type of access control, which can measure various human characteristics like fingerprints, eyes (retina), voice, face, and hand measurements and some systems can even grant you access by odor or the manner in which you walk. This method of biometric access control is very effective in securing premises or buildings, as it is nearly impossible to fake a biological imprint. This system uses a person’s identity based on chemical, behavioral or physical attributes of that specific person and cannot be duplicated, as every person has different ones, making it almost impossible to breach the security in this manner. The best part is that you never have to worry about losing your key or forgetting a certain code and all of these can be bypassed, unlike a biometric system.

Having a biometric system is great for companies as only pre-authorized people can successfully pass the biometric reader. When setting up the biometric system, all the fingerprints (for example) of the people being granted access are scanned and stored in the database. To gain access, your fingerprint is scanned by the sensors that identify your fingerprint and match it to the one in the database and within a second you are granted access.

A biometric system solely relies on who the person is genetically and not codes or passwords that can be forgotten or access cards that could be misplaced. This technology is also implemented to regulate access to not only buildings but also transportation systems and computer networks where sensitive information is stored. This enables that only the authorized individuals have access to it.

A standard biometric access control system has four main components, which consist of a sensor device, a quality assessment unit, a feature comparison, and matching unit, and the database. The sensor unit forms the most crucial part as it reads the fingerprint and the quality of this sensor determines the effectiveness of the whole unit. The relative of small ridge points can be extracted as a biometric measure. These systems can be combined with access cards or pin numbers for enhanced security.

Should a power failure occur, safety is not compromised as a fingerprint reader is typically only used to get into a room, not out. So individuals would be able to get out of the access-controlled room, but not back in until power has been restored.
